A year dedicated to the poet
On the initiative of the Municipality of Črnomelj, the Government of the Republic of Slovenia has declared 2028 the Year of Oton Župančič. It will mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of one of the greatest Slovenian poets.
The government adopted the decision on 17 July 2025. The Bela krajina Development and Information Centre, which manages the Oton Župančič Memorial House in Vinica, also took part in preparing the initiative.
I am glad that my cradle rocked in Bela krajina, so full of light and harmony.
The anniversary and a new Memorial House
Župančič Year coincides with the completion of the project “Renovation of the Oton Župančič Memorial House: Župančič’s World”. The poet’s birthplace, Vinica, will welcome the anniversary with a renovated house, a new museum exhibition and experiences that will bring his work closer to visitors of all generations.
The year 2028 will connect events, exhibitions and programmes across Slovenia. We will publish the programme and news as they come on the Župančič Year 2028 page.
