Letter to Berta, Paris 1905
“We shall also go and see those parts, so that you may see what kind of nest your little bird flew out of. I don’t know whether you will like it at first sight; no doubt the place and its people would win you over after a longer stay down there, even though it is half cut off from the world. But that, too, has its value and its charm.
To me, that world is especially dear, because the beginnings of my thinking and feeling are rooted there, and many an evening I hear the Kolpa murmuring from afar and I am washed over with homesickness.”
About my grandfather
“I fear I will no longer find my grandfather alive: I grow ever fonder of this man and spend more and more time with him whenever I go down there. In my young years I was afraid of him and avoided him as much as I could, but now I feel ever more strongly that I am of his blood and that I have all my gifts and abilities from him.
When he talks about his life, I could listen to him all day. People say he tells a lot of lies, but it isn’t true; he makes things up, and what a man makes up is not a lie, but art. For he does not lie to glorify and praise himself, but tells his stories in an engaging way – perhaps untrue in the details, but certainly true as a whole.”
