Župančič – A Master of Words
As part of the project “Renovation of the Oton Župančič Memorial House”, the museum’s central exhibition was newly conceived and installed in Vinica in 2014–2015. The exhibition on Oton Župančič (1878–1949), one of the most important Slovenian poets and translators, is entitled Župančič – A Master of Words.
It was conceived by Assoc. Prof. Dr Marijan Dović of the ZRC SAZU Institute of Slovenian Literature and Literary Studies, and the overall visual design was contributed by the architect Jurij Kocuvan (Studio 300, Novo mesto).
He has settled forever in our consciousness and in our hearts with his poems. We read them, reread them and listen to them with deep human emotion, absorbed and enchanted – enchanted by the beauty and musicality of our language, but above all by the noble and precious life of this poet, who so masterfully commands the wonderful expressive possibilities of our language.
Words that transcended their time
Župančič’s work ranges from intimate lyric poetry and poems for children to translations of great works of world literature. It is precisely the breadth of his work that shows why today we know him not only as a poet, but as one of the key shapers of Slovenian literary and linguistic culture.
The exhibition does not present his work merely chronologically. Individual themed stations invite visitors to discover Župančič through the motifs, thoughts, places and people that accompanied his life.
From Vinica to the Slovenian literary world
Vinica holds a special place in the story – the place of his childhood and a place he returned to again and again in his works. Images of Bela Krajina, its language and its people remained an important part of his creative world long after life had taken him elsewhere.
Through the exhibition, visitors gradually discover the connection between place, life and words, and learn how personal experiences became literature.
An exhibition to read and to experience
The classic museum presentation is complemented by contemporary interpretive elements that offer different ways of exploring Župančič’s world. Quotations, audio content, visual narratives and interactive points create a space where every visitor can find their own path through the story.
The exhibition is designed both for those who know Župančič’s work well and for visitors encountering it for the first time.
